In 1983, Mark Opperman answered the call to guide veterinary practices to a higher level of management. He founded VMC, Inc., a firm dedicated to excellence in veterinary practice management. In 33 years, he’s consulted with more than 2,000 veterinary hospitals throughout North America, providing timely, practical assistance in such matters as hiring associate veterinarians, establishing partnerships, developing exit strategies, addressing employee issues, and focusing on profitability and efficiency.
As a highly sought consultant and speaker, Mr. Opperman has assisted veterinarians and their management teams with comprehensive on-site consultation services, phone consultations, and seminars. In addition to his well-known seminar series, It's What's Up Front That Counts, Mr. Opperman has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally at such meetings as CVC, NAVC, WVC, World Small Animal Veterinary Conference, Denmark Annual Congress, the London Veterinary Forum, and the Southern European Veterinary Conference.

As an industry leader, Mr. Opperman helped bring cohesion to the veterinary management profession, founding the Veterinary Hospital Managers Association (VHMA) in 1981 and serving as its president until 1993. Through his VMC School of Veterinary Practice Management, he has trained more than 300 practice managers from all over the world, helping them to become more effective managers and, in many cases, contributing to their goals of attaining the Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) certification.
As a recognized authority in his field, he served as the hospital management editor for Veterinary Economics, and currently writes a feature column called “Practice Smarter” in Today’s Veterinary Business. Mr. Opperman is also the author of Veterinary Business Management: A Guide to an Efficient and Profitable Practice. His top-selling book, The Art of Veterinary Practice Management, has become a required management textbook in veterinary medical schools across the country.
In recognition of his many years of outstanding achievement in the field of veterinary practice management, Mr. Opperman was honored by receiving the Veterinary Hospital Manager of the Year Award from the VHMA in 1987, as well as the VHMA Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. In 2001, he was awarded speaker of the year by the North American Veterinary Conference. VMC Inc. continues to provide services that range from on-site consultations, to phone consultations and lectures, phone skills assessment services, and other customized services.
