Recently, more practices are looking at alternative DVM payment models that promote a team approach while still incentivizing associate veterinarians to grow hospital revenues and profits. In this presentation we will outline four commonly used compensation models. We will examine the history of how and why each model exists, and the drawbacks for each. We will discuss how compensation structures impact hospital cultures and can be designed to promote a culture of teamwork and collaboration. Using SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely) goals, a new compensation model can be tailored to an organization's goals.

Wendy Hauser, DVM
Joy Fuhrman, DVM, MBA, CPA
Originally from South Africa, Dr. Fuhrman has more than a decade of experience in financial consulting and corporate accounting. A graduate of Colorado State Universityís combined MBA/DVM program, she brings with her a combination of veterinary practice management, financial analysis, business valuation, professional development and leadership training skills. Her veterinary experience includes small animal general and emergency practice, small and large animal anesthesia and pain management, and small animal dentistry. She also has experience working with exotic pets, including birds and reptiles, as well as zoo animals and wildlife. Joy has served on the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association Board of Directors and helped develop their Power of Ten Leadership Academy. In her current role as Director of Finance and Operations for Shepherd Software, Inc., Dr. Fuhrman is responsible for managing the business operations for this start-up practice management software development company. She also provides financial and practice management consulting services to its clients.
Wendy Hauser, DVM
Dr Hauser earned her veterinary degree from Oklahoma State University in 1988. A small animal practitioner, she has been an associate, practice owner and relief veterinarian. In January 2015 Dr. Hauser left her position as an Industry Technical Services Veterinarian to establish Peak Veterinary Consulting. Dr. Hauser's most recent career move is as AVP, Veterinary Relations, Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group where she serves as the voice and face of the company to the veterinary profession, in addition to new business development. She has been highly engaged in AAHA in both new initiatives and as an AAHA Board Member and Vice-President. She currently serves as the AAHA Delegate to the AVMA House of Delegates. Dr. Hauser was responsible for helping design and facilitate Colorado VMA's Power of Ten, a recent graduate leadership academy and was the driving force behind the creation of the CVMA Power of Ten/Practice Managers program. Frequently published, she is the co-author of The Veterinarian's Guide to Healthy Pet Plans. Dr. Hauser is a frequent presenter at veterinary conferences, facilitating workshops on hospital culture, associate development, leadership, client relations and operations.
